The Ark of Life - Charity Dinner

Dear Friends and Supporters of Noah's Ark CARES,

Noah's Ark CARES is privileged to partner Life Community Services Society in this upcoming fundraising dinner.  Aptly themed "The Ark of Life", this event seeks to raise funds for both societies in providing a safe haven for the animals and the children.

Life Community Services Society is a registered charitable organization and a member of National Council of Social Services (NCSS).  Net proceeds raised from the event will be divided equally between the 2 societies, as such 50% of one's contribution will be entitled to 2.5times tax deduction.

Kitten adoption drive this weekend - 10th/11th September

A family of 6 kittens are waiting to find good homes who will love and take care of them for the rest of their lives. We believe it's better to have a loving family as compared to having no family at all.

The kittens are 2+mths old, healthy and active, and were rescued from an elderly guardian who can no longer care for them. They are extremely affectionate and love to interact with fosterers. We will rehome the kittens to genuine cat lovers and adopters who have experience handling kittens and cats.

We will also request for home visits to follow up on the adoption. If you can open your heart and your home to these little ones, please email us at noahsarkcares@gmail.com.

Charity Sneak Preview of "Kinako: Police Dog Dream"

This year, Noah's Ark CARES is pleased to announce its third-year-running Movie Screening. The show that will grace the screen this year would be "Kinako: Police Dog Dream" and you, yes you, are invited to join us for a special screening on the 4th of January 2011 (Tuesday). For a short synopsis, continue reading on!

Movie Synopsis

A Japanese movie which was inspired by the true story of a dog who failed her police dog test 5 times in a row, the film stars 18-year-old model/actress Kaho as Kyoko, an aspiring police dog trainer who wants to follow in her late father’s footsteps. She instantly feels a connection with newborn puppy Kinako, who was initially bred to be a good police dog but ended up being the runt of the litter and the least athletic of all her brothers and sisters. In spite of this, Kyoko is taken with her new training partner and spends her time trying to get the uncoordinated Kinako to make even one jump. Over time, Kyoko begins to have doubts about whether Kinako will ever make it as a police dog and considers letting her lead a different type of life.

Here we present some of the cases we have come across this past 2010. These are just a few of the animals which will benefit from your support. All of them are now residing comfortably at Noah's Ark, not needing to worry about their food or having a roof over their heads. They even have large fields and a pond to call their own!

Bruno suffered from a badly infected ear that had maggots in it due to the wound being untreated. He was an Industrial dog, and Industrial dogs suffer from such dangers because they fight over territory and food. However, Bruno has since moved to Noah's Ark and is happily living there.

Marmite was abandoned right in front of our sanctuary. She was emaciated and extremely fearful of humans, resulting in aggressive behaviour. Today, she has gradually learned to trust humans and is now of a healthy weight.

(Note: We are still looking for a family to adopt on the M'sian end her but we are unsure of the adoption chances.)

Scarlet, full story to be released in early 2011.
Scarlet was rescued just a few weeks ago with a huge, gaping wound to her small body. She was just a puppy. Her sister, Charley was also rescued because she was found immobilized by mud. We are unsure of their origins as they were discovered scampering about in the field in front of our sanctuary.

Berry, full story to be released in early 2011.
Struck down by a car, Berry was an injured monkey lying by the side of the road, waiting to die till Raymund found him. It grabbed Raymund's hand as if imploring Raymund to save his life. Part of his tail and his leg had to be amputated due to gangrene, but Berry is slowly recovering and learning how to move about despite his disability.

These are just a few of the many stories that we have. You can browse through our blog articles and read all about our rescue work and the sanctuary. If you've not visited us, you should! As for those who have visited, we look forward to seeing you again at our tour, scheduled for March 2011.

NA Tea Party!

On 6th December, Noah’s Ark had their annual tea party at Nyee Phoe Flower Garden. It was my first time volunteering at Noah’s Ark and I was wondering what my duties were. The volunteers arrived earlier to set up the venue, arranging tables and chairs, and assembling the food line, both for humans and dogs.

Amidst all the preparation, the volunteers also took turns in taking care of the dogs and letting them walk around, especially Zeus who did not like being tied up. I guess he is used to running free in Noah’s Ark! He was especially interested in the different smells around him and in making new friends.

Very soon, owners and dogs started coming in. Food for humans was served on one side, and for dogs on the other side. On the doggie menu was fish, pork ribs, some biscuits and a choice of either a strawberry or durian cupcake. The pretty cupcakes were carefully decorated with doggie safe whipped cream. Some owners were really concerned about what they were feeding their dogs, even bothering to peel the meat off the bones for them. It was really heart-warming to see the extent of their love for their furry friends.

Throughout the tea session, there were fun and games carried out on the stage. Our host started everything off with a short skit, with Prince acting as an abandoned dog. Another game included Coco looking for money hidden in towels, just based on her sense of smell. She successfully found the money after 3 tries. However, the game that garnered the more enthusiastic response was when all the schnauzers and their owners were invited on stage. The game was based on how well the owners know their dogs. The owners were to be blindfolded and had to feel a specific part of the dogs lined up, the tail or the front right paw, and find the dog that belongs to them. Despite the all the schnauzers being so similar, the owners had no difficulty recognizing their own dogs! To end it all off, the owners took turns persuading their dogs to go through a long red tunnel. It was really amusing to see the owners enthusiastically encouraging their dogs to go through the tunnel, hence increasing the dog’s confidence.

One sweet dog I met that day was Pudding. Pudding has bladder cancer and was wearing diapers, but that didn’t affect his pleasant disposition at all. He is so sweet and lovable! Oh, and greedy too… His owner affectionately calls him the vacuum cleaner. Overall, I had a really fun time serving food and walking the dogs. I went home feeling very contented in knowing that all the dogs I met are in loving homes.

This year, we have an exciting program lined up for you! Located in Hilton (next to Far East shopping centre), it will be one of the most talked about charity fundraising dinners of the year. Chef Lee will prepare an exquisite Italian cuisine for that night, with a choice of fish or chicken. A vegetarian menu has also been specially prepared, hence do enquire when you register. As for entertainment, be prepared to put your hands together to welcome Hossan Leong, Tan Soo Khoon & Noor Quek! These are just 3 names out of the other programs we have lined up for you, and we have many more exciting items planned out!

Funds raised from this event will help defray part of the running costs of Noah’s Ark Sanctuary – that currently houses our 850 dogs, 500 cats, 5 horses and many other small animals in Johor. A small part of it will also be allocated to our on-going sterilization projects in Singapore namely Project Industrial Dogs and Project Catsnip.

Since the launch of Noah’s Ark CARES in June 2005, we have sterilized close to 500 stray dogs and cats gathered in the Industrial Estates as well as housing estates. We hope to continue and lengthen the lifespan of these projects with your help!

Rosina has devoted herself to the care and understanding of animals, with compassion from her heart and her caring and loving character. Rosina is aware of the importance of animal communication in helping people to appreciate animals as amazing companions, and in guiding people to come to better understand their pets, so that, via animal communication, special bonding and relationships can grow between human beings and animals. As more people come to value and understand animals, fewer animals will be abandoned.

If you have always wondered why your dog is afraid of certain sounds, dislikes certain people or places, enjoys marking certain parts of your sofa, etc – this would be an excellent opportunity to meet Rosina and find out why they do the things they do.

If you don't already know, the entire proceeds from this movie premiere were going to help Mr Tan's three dogs, [See http://noahsarkcares.blogspot.com/2009/01/home-alone-for-christmas-mr-tans-story.html] ensuring they will be happy, comfortable and remain together as one family. The monies raised will be used to pay their medical bills, the exportation and transportation to Noah's Ark and their upkeep at the Sanctuary - where they will live out the rest of their lives. Like Hachiko, they will never be reunited with their Master here on earth, but we are sure that Mr Tan will always be etched in their memories, and someday, they will meet again.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said "Many have forgotten this truth, but you must not forget it. You remain responsible, forever, for what you have tamed." We will always be responsibile towards our pets that are very much part of our daily lives.
